A growing body of evidence suggests that children are already exposed to microplastics in the uterus. The effects of this exposure on the developing fetus are however unclear. In the current study, we aim to investigate the effects of maternal/paternal exposure to microplastics in their occupation, and the risk of congenital anomalies and adverse pregnancy outcomes. For this case-control study, we will use data from the Eurocat registry as cases, and data from Lifelines and LifelinesNEXT as controls. The knowledge obtained will give a first indication of the effects of microplastic exposure on offspring in humans.
DUTCH ABSTRACT
Er is toenemend bewijs dat kinderen al tijdens de zwangerschap worden blootgesteld aan microplastics. Het is echter onduidelijk wat het effect hiervan is op de foetus in ontwikkeling. In deze studie willen we onderzoeken wat het effect is van maternale/paternale blootstelling aan microplastics in de werkomgeving op de kans op aangeboren aandoeningen en ongunstige zwangerschapsuitkomsten. In dit case-controle onderzoek worden data van Eurocat gebruikt als cases, en data van Lifelines en LifelinesNEXT als controles. De inzichten uit dit project zullen een eerste indicatie geven van hoe blootstelling aan microplastics het nageslacht van mensen kan beïnvloeden.
