Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia, and is associated with substantial morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. Despite advances in therapies, the prevention of AF remains a significant challenge. Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) have garnered considerable attention, particularly in the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but the relation of O3FA consumption to AF incidence remains unclear. We aim to determine if there exists an association between O3FA consumption and the incidence of AF in the Lifelines cohort, and to quantify the amount of O3FA consumption needed to influence AF incidence, should an association be found.
