Background: Societal contributions include both formal employment and unpaid activities such as 
volunteering and informal caregiving. While both are essential for a well-functioning society, unpaid 
contributions are often overlooked. 
Objectives: This project examines how individuals combine formal employment and unpaid 
activities across the working life course, and how these patterns are associated with personal 
characteristics, health, support factors and life events. 
Methods: We apply longitudinal trajectory modelling to analyse transitions and co-development 
over time. 
Relevance: The findings will contribute to policies that better accommodate diverse forms of 
societal participations and address challenges such as labour shortages and population ageing. 
Achtergrond: Maatschappelijke bijdragen omvatten zowel formeel betaald werk als onbetaalde 
activiteiten, zoals vrijwilligerswerk en informele mantelzorg. Hoewel beide essentieel zijn voor een 
goed functionerende samenleving, blijven onbetaalde bijdragen vaak onderbelicht.
Doelstellingen: Dit project onderzoekt hoe mensen formeel betaald werk en onbetaalde 
activiteiten combineren gedurende de werkzame levensloop, en hoe deze patronen samenhangen 
met persoonlijke kenmerken, hulpbronnen, gezondheid en levensgebeurtenissen.
Methoden: Met behulp van longitudinale trajectmodellering analyseren we transities en 
gezamenlijke ontwikkelingen over de tijd. 
Relevantie: De resultaten bieden aanknopingspunten voor beleid dat beter aansluit bij diverse 
vormen van maatschappelijke participatie, en dragen bij aan oplossingen voor arbeidsmarktkrapte 
en vergrijzing.
