The project directly contributes to the central aims of LifeLines and aligns with the "Healthy Ageing" research theme by addressing factors that influence the management of asthma, a chronic condition that significantly impacts long-term health and quality of life. Asthma exacerbations can severely reduce a patient’s quality of life and, in severe cases, be life-threatening. This project aims to deepen our understanding of the factors contributing to acute exacerbations, which may open avenues for preventive measures and improve long-term asthma management.
Additionally, this research will provide crucial insights into the added value of antibiotic therapy alongside oral corticosteroids in treating acute exacerbations among adults with asthma. Understanding the potential role of antibiotics could lead to optimized treatment strategies, reduced exacerbations, and an overall improvement in quality of life, contributing to healthier ageing. The use of LifeLines data or biomaterial is essential, as it provides a rich and comprehensive dataset that allows for detailed analysis of patient demographics, treatment outcomes, and exacerbation patterns, thereby enhancing the validity and generalizability of the research findings.
