Sustainable, plant-based dietary patterns and risk of chronic kidney and cardiovascular disease: assessing differences across food processing levels and socioeconomic position in the Lifelines Cohort
Previous studies cautiously suggest benefits of some, but not all, sustainable and plant-based diets for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention. However, critical knowledge gaps evolve around the impacts of diverse sustainable diets in different sociodemographic settings, the effect of replacing specific food sources and particularly, ultra-processed foods within sustainable diets. This research project aims to understand how different modes of sustainable eating, including vegan/vegetarian, Planetary Health Diets and organic food consumption, are associated with kidney and vascular health, and the role of socioeconomic differences and substitutions of (minimally and ultra-processed) food sources within these diets.
