Population ageing and associated increases in neurodegenerative and morbidity burden represents a major challenge for public health. However, the knowledge on the underlying mechanisms and our ability to predict cognitive decline and physical capacity changes remain limited. The proposed research will investigate multiple biomarkers as potential pathways between sociodemographic, lifestyle factors and cognitive and physical decline. This will include validation of previously found biomarkers of dementia, exploration of trajectories in immunosenescence, and mediation analyses for the role of biomarkers in the association between modifiable risk factors and cognitive and physical decline. This research will inform interventions to foster healthy ageing.
