This project investigates the mechanisms of loneliness among young adults using Lifelines data. We aim to (1) identify childhood and adolescent predictors of social and emotional loneliness in young adulthood, and (2) examine how loneliness relates to later mental health-related outcomes, including the potential mediating role of lifestyle factors. The study uses data from multiple Lifelines waves, including validated loneliness measures and a range of potential social and behavioral predictors, lifestyle mediators, and mental health-related outcomes. Findings will support early identification of at-risk individuals and inform targeted prevention and intervention strategies for loneliness in young adults.
